Color & Variegated Stitching

Let’s talk about classes. No matter where you are at on your learning journey classes can be a great asset to your toolbox. They serve in the obvious of learning something new, but beyond that, a new viewpoint, a refresher in a fun past technique, mastery or growth in a particular skill or even just simple confidence.

Recently, I purchased and began taking classes over with the Altenew Academy under the Altenew Educator Certification Program. I take their standard classes that all have access to and then submit projects to an Educator assignment gallery. Projects are reviewed and critiqued, as necessary, in an effort to master skills that might be taught to others at some point.

Today, I am sharing the project I made for the Altenew In The Mood For Color class taught by Stephanie Klauck.  I don’t often think about what colors mean what, like yellow representing friendship, pink for sensitive and sweet, or rainbows for happiness. Often I use whatever color I am drawn to, which there is nothing wrong with, but as I looked back through projects I have created I looked from the perspective of what feeling the color I used might represent. Did they align? Did they not? Does it matter? Probably it doesn’t really matter, but I did find the cards I like best tended to express what the color represents. Interesting, right?!?

I began my color story today with Sue Spargo’s Razzle thread (weight #8) in Island Living. I matched the thread to Altenew’s ink in Jet Black and Aqualicious, along with Hero Arts ink Indigo and Neon Purple (BTW, it is okay to mix ink brands!). To me they represent calm, cool and an understated confidence. Perfect for the I Admire Your Strength Sentiment from the Altenew Trigonometry stamp set.

I freehand stamped the triangles from Trigonometry in a mix of pattern and color. I hadn’t used my Neon Purple and it was super juicy, like uber juicy. So much so that I ended up touching up the edges of a couple of triangles with a white Signo pen.

I used the dot pattern Trigonometry die to create holes I could stitch through. With a large eyed needle I created a different design in each of the 3 die cut triangles. I wanted the variegation of the thread to to be the focal point so I chose to do simple stitches. For the top and bottom triangle I did a backstitch. For the middle triangle I did a take on a satin stitch with taking the thread from the outside holes the through the center hole, ignoring the middle row (top down will allow you to keep the center point perfectly. Bottom up can look a little messy). This is a heavy weight thread at #8, but several stitches through each hole filled them beautifully. You can learn about stitches on Craftsy, here.

As the variegation changed I jumped around the triangle on the back to get to where I needed to be. No one will be looking at the back, so I’m in the clear! Good quality variegated threads do not transition from one color to the next at even intervals. The more uneven, the better!

I added foam tape to the back areas of the card with no stitching and mounted it on an A2 folded card base. I white heat embossed the sentiment on black paper and popped that up for dimension, as well. I added just a few Ebony Black Nuvo drops to draw attention to the sentiment.

Thank you for joining me today. I hope you’ve been inspired to take a class, stitch or even just get in that craft room and create! See you soon!
